The
Rhythm of the Sea
You were falling asleep when the sound
Of the beat, as a noise in the night,
Was a fear. On the beach where you sleep
Is the burning of fires and the pound-
ing white beat of the drum. And the dreams
That you had are now making you sad
As you weep at the sound. They are break-
ing apart like the smudging of colour
Or muffling of sound in the haze
’Round the fire. So your dreams are ablaze
And your sleep is upset: by the sea:
By the sound: by the beat: by the drum.
