Abintra
The willow Festival 2002 Peterborough
Along
with Ellen Brody, Abintra were one of the few
bands over the weekend that surprised me.
Although it would be impossible to listen to
this dark band without thinking of Tool, this is
in no way a bad thing.
The
unsigned bands hall of fame ifs littered with
the dead carcasses of thousands of RnR bands,
thrash bands, indie bands, punk bands, and of
course dark industrial types. But what gives
Abintra the advantage they deserve is that few
bands of this genre make it sound as good as
they do in the real world. I have yet to see a
band like this that can;
· Play with a straight face
· Sound and look talented
· Keep their dignity by avoiding the make up;
But Abintra manage all of this, easily.
It
wouldn’t be fair to leave the comparisons at
the feet of Maynard Keenan and co. ~Abintra also
have the ability to invoke memories of classic
Pink Floyd times, the riffs provided by Ciro are
sublimely by R Jones’s keyboard manipulation.
It
was obvious to most that singer Andy would one
day grow into a fine example of a tortured
artist, and I’m here to say that he’s pulled
it off brilliantly, coming across as a mixture
of greats such as Marilyn Manson to Layne
Stayely, even Moby, it isn’t an act either,
it’s something that he has matured into
naturally.
Due
to come up and play Nottingham in October it
will be interesting to see Abintra play to a
crowd that perhaps hasn’t heard of them
before. Keep you eyes on the band now, because
soon you’ll be blaming them for supplying kids
with offensive T-shirts and looking miserable,
just like those before them.
Despite
the show in the Peterborough.net tent rocking I
think that it would be possible for this band to
go from strength to strength without having to
rely as heavily on playing live as other bands
that have appeared on the bill here. With the
right handling a CD from these guys will sound
just as professional and chilling in a darkened
room as anybody.
