Means
of Escape - Take out the opposition
www.means-of-escape.net
The
work on this CD is surprisingly familiar.
Everything about the title track Take out the
opposition pays homage to the legacies of faves
such as Rage Against The Machine and Downset,
with just a pinch of Clawfinger.
From
the first thump of the drums it’s clear that
MOE take their music seriously, and they mean
business. The track slides smoothly from it’s
full frontal attack on The National Front to a
bridge that the boys at Rage would have been
proud of. At the stroke of 2 minutes twenty
seconds stickman Jon lets the audience know that
he has a double bass pedal( or drum?….Ed), and
by God he’s gonna use it, which he does with
both style and grace.
Track
two, Built on Anger like all good buildings has
a strong foundation. The funked up verses are
very skilful, especially when returning from the
just as skilful yet infinitely slower
Metallica-esque choruses. The real skill on this
track though comes from lead man Shane’s
vocals whose style here takes me back to Chris
Cornell in his days with Temple of the dog.
Track
three, Against, sadly lacks something that the
first two tracks have. It sounds too much like
other demo tracks from other bands, and cannot
stand out on it’s own as a musical piece.
However once again the vocals are superb.
I
want to take nothing away from what the guys
have achieved with this recording. It originally
went into the CD for the purpose of this review,
but I know that it will keep finding it’s way
back in there.
I can’t wait to see the band live, and urge
others to do so. |
